Breadfruit came to Jamaica in 1793, brought from the South Pacific by Captain William Bligh as a cheap food source for enslaved Africans. Today, it’s a staple of Jamaican cuisine—roasted on open fires, fried, boiled, or made into flour. Rich in carbohydrates, fiber, and Vitamin C, it’s a true superfood. Beyond nutrition, breadfruit symbolizes resilience and creativity, as Jamaicans turned what was once a tool of oppression into a beloved national food, feeding families and inspiring sayings like “Yuh cyaan plant breadfruit and expect pear.”
